The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library
offers computer
classes
that meet the need of most of
our library patrons. Whether you
are a beginner
in need
of basic computer or internet skills or desire to gain
skills for the job
market we have you the patron in mind.
Registration is required and will begin , January 18, 2010.
Evening classes are 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Saturday classes are 10a.m.-Noon.
The Basics
File Management Made Simple
Have you ever tried downloading a file and couldn’t find it? Are you finding it difficult to manage your own data? This class will provide basic knowledge in common file operations such as: working with folders, creating a new file, editing an existing file and saving it, opening a pre-existing file, backing up files using a ROM burner and other external devices. Basic computer skills are recommended.

Introduction to Computers Using Microsoft Vista
This course will introduce the student to many of the new and improved features of the Microsoft Windows operating system. The student will learn about navigation and search capabilities, start menu features, tabbed browsing, Windows Media Center, Windows sidebar, Windows mail, and
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.

Introduction to Basic Internet
This class will provide training to successfully access and navigate the Internet. Topics that will be covered are: browsers, internet security, connection types, what to look for in an internet service provider, and search engines.

Introduction to Web-based Email Using Yahoo! Mail
This class will navigate the world of web-based email. The student will learn how to open their own free email account, forward and reply to email messages, set up an address book, and create attachments using Yahoo! Mail.

Introduction to OpenOffice.org
Learn about an exciting program called OpenOffice.org that is
free
to download and use; and replicates many of the functions
of
Microsoft Word and Excel.
OpenOffice.org- Writer
This program is a no cost option to Microsoft Word. In this class the student will learn basic word processing and how to begin creating professional-looking documents. Topics covered in this class are: open, close, save, saving in other formats, print, formatting, cut, copy, and paste.

OpenOffice.org- Calc
This program is a no cost option to Microsoft Excel. In this class the student will learn how to create simple
spread sheets as they gain understanding of how to create a workbook, edit, formulas and functions, basic formatting, saving and printing.

Microsoft Office
Basic Skills for Microsoft Excel 2007
This class introduces basic spread sheet skills using Microsoft
Excel 2007. Students will learn to navigate through the
program to create simple spread sheets. Gain skills necessary
to create and format basic spreadsheets and calculate data
using basic formuals and functions. Other topics include cut,
copy, and pasting data; using Microsoft Help.
Dates offered: March 18, May 19.
Intermediate Skills Microsoft Excel 2007
This class exposes students to Excel's table features. This
feature is easy to use, and can make data retrieval very easy
for things such as call lists, personal inventory lists, or group
memberships. Students will learn how to create, maintain,
sort, and filter Excel tables, and more!
Dates offered: March 25, May 20.
Basic Skills for Microsoft Word 2007
This class introduces basic word-processing skills using
Microsoft Word 2007. Students will learn to navigate through
the program to create professional-looking documents. Gain
skills necessary to open, close, save, print, format, and edit
documents. Other topics include: cut, copy, and paste; using
Microsoft Help.

Intermediate Skills for Microsoft Word 2007
This class introduces the next level of skills using Microsoft
Word 2007. In this course, students will learn how to create
and format tables, a dynamic feature used to create documents
such as registration forms to personal calendars. Students will
also be exposed to simple techniques for enhancing longer
documents, such as including headers, footers, and page
numbers into a document; readability statistics, and more!

Ebay Buying
Are you new to Ebay? This class will provide basic knowledge on how to use Ebay. Topics that will be addressed are: setting up a user account, searching, bidding, security and payment options. Students must be comfortable using a mouse. A web-based email address is required.

Ebay Selling
This is a continuation of Ebay Buying. This class will address topics from the perspective of the seller. Topics that will be addressed are: setting up a seller’s account, listing an item, payment methods, and shipping options. An established Ebay account is required.

Social Networking
Introduction to Facebook
Explore the social networking phenomenon that is Facebook. Participants will be shown how to set up their page, add a picture, find friends and family, control their content and ensure the security of their information.

Sharing Photos Online using Flickr
Quickly and easily share your photos online with family and friends using Flickr.com. This class will guide the student through the process of setting up a Flickr account, upload pictures to the web, learn how to organize online photos using tags, define privacy levels that allow you to decide who can view your photos, label photos and provide captions, add and respond to comments. Experience with the Internet is required. Date offered: March 22
