Friends of the Library Board Meeting Minutes
January 4, 2012

MATERIALS:  Agenda; November 2011 Minutes; Treasurer’s Report; Calendar/Board Member Contact Information; Bylaws; Committee and Project Descriptions; Books and Brown Bags Guidelines; Ballot

Present:  Janet Artley, Joe Bastow, Gordon Breckenridge, Kaye Breckenridge, Maureen Carney, Michelle Cornish, Ken Dully, Marge Granlund, Anne Heraghty, Jackie Herbert, Sue Kaiser, Kim Krajniak, Howard Lahti, Donna Mullen, Sue Sexton, Carol Silver, Jenny Valley, Mary Weeks, Eric Magness-Eubank, Christine Wedge, and guest Carol Lund.

I.       President Ken Dully called the meeting to order at 4:33 p.m. and welcomed new members Joe Bastow, Kim Krajniak, Donna Mullen, and Jenny Valley.

II.      Agenda: Approved as submitted.

III.     Secretary’s Report/November Minutes:  Noted that Kim Krajniak and Donna Mullen were approved as new Board members via email vote in December.  Approved as amended.

IV.     Treasurer’s Report:  Janet Artley presented the 2012 Budget.  Jackie Herbert moved to approve and Sue Kaiser seconded; motion passed.  Budget and report filed as submitted.

V.      Committee and Project Sign-Up Sheet:  Members asked to sign up for two committees and two projects.

VI.     Committee Reports:
Membership — Maureen Carney reported 81 members so far for 2012.

Nominations/Elections of Officers — Michelle Cornish moved to accept the following slate; Sue Sexton seconded:  Ken Dully, president; Howard Lahti, vice president; Maureen Carney, secretary; and Jan Artley, treasurer.  Motion carried.

Newsletter — Gordon Breckenridge announced the due date for articles is Friday, Jan. 27.  The Board will review the newsletter draft at the Feb. 1 meeting.  Assembly and mailing will be Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 9:30.

VII.    Project Reports:
Books in the Baking (Saturday, March 24) — Michelle distributed a draft of the flyer.  At the February meeting she will ask for volunteers to help with the event.  Changes:  shortened hours and three age categories.

VIII.   Old Business:
Blizzard of Books — Kaye Breckenridge reported the initial request was for 1,030 books, but 920 were actually given to the Salvation Army.  Kaye thanked Jackie Herbert for making reminder calls to volunteers—31 people were able to get the project done in about an hour.  Diane Speer wrote two articles about Blizzard.  Suggestions for next year:  remind volunteers to tie books back-to-back and arrange for students to deliver books to the mall on the afternoon of distribution.

Community Spelling Bee (Friday, Feb. 24) — The committee will meet again on
Jan. 18.  Sue Kaiser will work with the schools; Mary Weeks and Ken have secured corporate sponsorships.

IX.     New Business: 
Tour Guide — Guest Carol Lund from the City of Alpena Historic Study Committee asked if the FOL would consider supporting a joint project involving the research and publication of a North Side Tour Guide.  The project will be on the February agenda for further discussion.

Books and Brown Bags (Mar. 27; April 3, 10, 17) — Anne Heraghty has agreed to chair this project.

Staff Luncheon (April 23) — Chairperson needed.

X.      Director’s Report (Eric Magness-Eubank):

  • Improvements continuing with computer lab; also addition of a secondary
    meeting place on the second floor.
  • Grant from Michigan Cultural Affairs for a jazz series.
  • Major author for Authors in the Fall should be in place soon; planning an
    event to announce the line-up for the series.
  • Starting to map out the library millage renewal plan; FOL Board involvement.
  • Leadership Book Club begins Jan. 24—a joint project with the Chamber of Commerce to help develop community leaders.

XI.     Ken Dully adjourned the meeting at 5:43 p.m.
